As predicted a few months back, smartphones passed global PC shipments for the first time in history. These numbers do not include the number of PC’s that are already in use. While the new smartphone shipments have overtaken new PC shipments, in terms of total numbers already in use the PC is still leading. It’s only a matter of time before the tables turn!
This inflection point has occurred much quicker than expected. Former Morgan Stanley Analyst and now venture capital advisor Mary Meeker pointed to 2012 as when we would see Smartphones outselling PC’s in a presentation back in November. (see Below)
What’s interesting is that these numbers do not include the tens of millions of iPods and tablets which could also be considered mobile smart devices.
